On Saturday July 23rd, the draft for the second season of the European Lacrosse League (ELL) took place in Radotin, Czech Republic. Five Irish internationals from this year’s World Indoor Lacrosse Championships were selected and a further two others from the Irish Lacrosse League / ILL Allstars, were also chosen to compete in the 2011 ELL.
Sean Gibson was the highest selected Irish player, going in the third round and 17th overall to LC Sparta. Sonny Campbell of Galway in the Irish Lacrosse League and Irish International Jacob Morris were also selected to LC Sparta 65th and 77th overall. LC Sparta will be coached by Czech Lacrosse President and Czech National Team GM, Roman Pokorny.
Conor Walsh was the second highest Irish draft pick, selected 49th overall to the Bison team out of LC Radotin. Ryan Doran was also selected to the Bison going 73rd overall in the draft. This team will be very strong with Czech Internationals Martin Kostka, Adam Kostka, Petr Poupé, Radek Skala, and Tomas Riha in goals.
Conor Dockery of Galway in the Irish Lacrosse League was selected 65th overall to the Old Dogs Pilsen team. Paddy O’Leary was selected 66th overall to a very strong Bats team who will be managed by Slovak international Villiam Culman and will have a strong LC Jizni Mesto presence.
With the draft now completed there will be a small combine in Radotin on August 20th, where an additional few players may be slected to each team. The ELL commences on September 10-11th in Bratislava, SK and promises to be an exciting opening weekend. The ELL is played over four weekends in September and October and is the premier box lacrosse league in Europe.#
