Irish National Women’s Lacrosse Team Departs for Canada for World Cup

The Irish national women’s lacrosse team sets off this weekend for Oshawa, Ontario, Canada to compete in the Women’s World Cup of lacrosse, taking place from 10-20 July.  Information about the tournament is available at http://www.2013worldlacrosse.com/.  This will be the second time that the Irish national team has competed in this tournament, having finished in an impressive 5th place on the previous outing in 2009.

The Irish team has been seeded in Pool A with Latvia, Netherlands, New Zealand and Finland, and will also play against Germany.  The team will first take part in a pre-tournament training camp in Canada, and will play a warm-up friendly match against Sweden before the Opening Ceremonies on 10th of July.

The schedule of games is as follows:

Thursday, 11 July @ 10am Ireland v. Latvia

Friday, 12 July @ 9.30am Netherlands v. Ireland

Saturday, 13 July @ 2.30pm Ireland v. New Zealand

Sunday, 14 July @ 9am Finland v. Ireland

Tuesday, 16 July @ 9am Ireland v. Germany

Following Pool play, teams will be seeded into a Championship Bracket of 12 teams and a Diamond Consolation Bracket of 7 teams.  The Championship Bracket will be the teams in Pool A, the top 2 teams in Pools B, C and D and the next highest ranked team.  The seven (7) teams in the Diamond Consolation Bracket will be re-seeded into two new pools, X and Y, based on rankings and teams previously played in the pool play.

Games in the Championship Bracket will be played to determine the semi-finalists, with those games to be played on Friday, 19 July.  The final will be played on Saturday, 20 July at 3pm (local time).
