Cork Lacrosse is a club that you will be hearing more of over the coming months as Tony Devine, Arthur Cullinan and Alex Mowatt-Larssen (and others) hope to re-establish a club that was last active in 2011. Devine was one of the founders of the Dublin Lacrosse Club in 2004 and he hopes that he can help reproduce the success that he had while helping establish that club. Cullinan has been involved in UCD Lacrosse and the Dublin Bay Prawns Lacrosse Club and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Irish Lacrosse League. Mowatt-Larssen has been involved with the Dublin Bay Prawns and has played for a number of years in the US. The combination of their efforts demonstrates a strong and focused determination to establish lacrosse in Cork.
Cullinan thinks that “it’s a really exciting opportunity to grow the game in Ireland and truly make the Irish Lacrosse League an All-Ireland League. With Cork’s rich sporting culture, I’m sure we will be able to find some top-quality athletes who are keen to try something new.”
Mowatt-Larssen, a University College Cork student, is hopeful that he may be able to establish a club team at UCC as well. Mowatt-Larssen says, “Cork is a great sporting city, and with the resources and pool of possible players that UCC can provide I’m confident that a tradition of playing lacrosse can grow here. With the success of college clubs in UCD, Galway and Belfast, hopefully we can emulate that growth of new Irish players and eventually have both a college and club team.” Devine believes that combining two clubs in the beginning will help foster development until both clubs reach critical mass.
In the coming weeks these gentlemen will be meeting with a development officer with the Cork Sports Partnership and they hope that this meeting will help the club find a training pitch and provide some much needed support and guidance for the club. The gentlemen are also working with Ireland Lacrosse to source equipment. The Cork team has received interest from 8 experienced players so far but they would like to hear from all interested players from all sporting backgrounds and whether experienced or not.
People wishing to express an interest in joining the club are encouraged to go to www.irelandlacrosse.ie/clubs/cork for more details.
