Avengers Lead at Half Way Point While UCD Keeps Pace

In heavy conditions the Irish Lacrosse League too to the field on Saturday the 1st of March in Dangan Sports Grounds. This was the third week of the ILL and marks the midway point of the season. This week saw action between UCD and the Prawns in game one while the Avengers would take on the hosts NUIG.

Game one was hotly contested between UCD and the Prawns as is always the case. The Prawns who have struggled this year with a consistent line-up looked to build on their week two victory while UCD was looking to bounce back after a tough defeat at the hands of the Avengers. It would be the students that would run out as winners in this one taking a three goal lead early that they would hold onto throughout the game. The game would see ILL starlet Cian Rushe earn his first hattrick in the league.

Game two saw the Avengers take on NUIG. The Avengers who were depleted and without starting attackmen James Hearn, Calvin Craig, and LSM Patrick Ferry showed that their midfield could step up and produce. The Avengers would run out to a 18-2 scoreline with Sean Gibson (8g,1a) leading all scorers on the day with Drew Wickmann earning a hattrick and five helpers. Tony Devine had his best game in several seasons for the Avengers scoring a pair and adding 4 assists. While for Galway Tim Segal was once again a stand-out in the Galway goal despite conceding 18 goals.

Next Action for the ILL: Will be after the National Team Weekend in NYC over St. Patrick’s Day. Where on March 22 the ILL see’s NUIG take on UCD and the Prawns square off against the hosts DALC. Also, expected is the first ever East vs West game were residents* of the East coast (Leinster / Ulster) will take on the residents of the West Coast (Munster / Connacht). *Residency is based on players primary residence during the 2014 ILL Season. Game format will be 4×15 minute running time.
