Lead Up to WILC 2007

On February 9th and 10th the Irish National Indoor Lacrosse Team held it’s first even National Tryout at the Loughlinstown County Dublin. Twenty-eight attended the event under the watchful eyes of the ILF Head Coach, Paul Stewart along with the Assistant Coaches Jeff Garlin and Dan Leidl and Strength and Conditioning Coach/Athletic Trainer, John Cavanaugh. The team will be announced shortly.

The Irish Lacrosse Foundation today named Bob McMahon, Jeff Garlin and Dan Leidl as assistant coaches for the 2007 Ireland National Indoor Lacrosse Team.

Bob McMahon, from Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, is presently the Assistant Coach for the Arizona Sting of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Bob has served as Head Coach of the Albany Attack in 2002-2003 and was selected NLL Coach of the Year in 2002.

Jeff Garlin brings 35 years of experience as a player and coach to the Ireland Indoor Lacrosse program. Jeff is an accredited Level 2 Coach with the National Coaching Certification Program of the Canadian Lacrosse Association.

Dan Leidl served as a captain of the 2006 Ireland National Lacrosse Team, which finished with a 5-2 record (7th place) at the World Lacrosse Championships in London, Ontario, Canada. Dan also participated for Team Ireland in the 2002 World Championships in Perth, Australia and played for Team USA in the 2003 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Ontario, Canada.

The Irish National Indoor Lacrosse Team today announced that Paul Stewart has been selected as Head Coach of the 2007 Ireland Indoor Lacrosse National Team. “Ireland lacrosse is fortunate to add Paul Stewart to it’s coaching staff”, said Tim Weir, ILF Director of Coaching Development. Coach Stewart is presently the Assistant Coach for the New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League. In 2006, Stewart served as the Director of Scouting for the NLL’s Minnesota Swarm. A resident of Ontario, Canada, Coach Stewart has been actively involved in playing and coaching for the Brokklin Redman in the OLA Senior League. Paul played for Ireland’s first National Lacrosse Team in the 2001 European Championships.

The Irish Lacrosse Foundation is proud to announce the Irish National Team’s participation in the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Canada, May 14 – 20, 2007 at the Halifax Metro Centre. Additional information regarding the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships can be found at http://www.worldindoorlacrosse.com.

This will be Ireland’s first ever participation in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. “The World Indoor Championship provides a fantastic opportunity for players and our programs in Ireland to step up to the next level”, states Ireland’s National Team Captain, Michael Kennedy. Ireland joins the host and 2003 defending IWLC Champion, Canada along with six other nations including Australia, Czech Republic, England, Iroquois Nationals, Scotland and the United States in vying for the World Title.

The 2007 Ireland Indoor National Team will be selected following a tryout to be held in Dublin in February 2007. Dates and location to be announced shortly.
