Avengers and UCD Winners in Opening Weekend

25-01-2014 (National Sports Campus) The Irish Lacrosse League (ILL) kicked off despite mother nature’s best efforts to play her part.

NUIG vs UCD

The battle of the students was closer than the 7-1 scoreline as Galway fought hard and an outstanding game from Tim Segal in the NUIG goal kept Galway in with a shout through most of the match. UCD did all of the scoring through the first three quarters while Galway blanked UCD in the fourth and got one back through Jake Royle. Tadhg Bolger for UCD led all scorers with 2 goals and 3 assists while Andrew Murphy (2G), Ciarán Boyan (1G), #25 (1G), and Cian Rushe (1G) all got on the scoresheet for UCD.

Avengers vs Prawns

In the Dublin derby, it was the Avengers that continued their form from the first half of the season and ran up an impressive 17-8 score over the Prawns who, seem to be looking for an answer to replace Padraig O’Leary. Calvin Craig led the way for the Avengers with 7 goals in an impressive regular season debut for the Avengers. James Hearn continued where he left off as last year’s top scorer adding three of his own in a potent Dublin attack. Michael Kennedy and Sean Gibson both added two each while, Patrick Ferry, Conor O’Brien, and Drew Wichmann each added singles of their own. Meanwhile, Martin Scanlon registered 4 goals in a losing effort but sparking a spirited fourth quarter comeback. Mark Colgan had a pair with David Lusby and #21 each getting solos in the game. Kevin Quinn had to be sharp in the Prawns goal making several big saves throughout the game.

With the first week in the books the Avengers are ahead on goal differential over club rivals UCD with NUIG in third and the Prawns rounding out the league table.

Special Note: In scoring on the day, Sean Gibson became the first player to reach 100th point mark in Irish Lacrosse League play. Congratulations to Sean Gibson for this accomplishment.

Next League action is on February 8th in Galway (Dangan Sports Ground). This week see’s league leaders Avengers take on UCD and the NUIG home to the Prawns.
